Forward or reversible plate compactor: what is the difference?

A forward plate only travels one direction, is lighter and easier to handle, and is ideal for paver bases, sand and thin gravel lifts. A reversible plate is heavier, hits harder and can back up without turning around, which makes it the right tool for trench backfill, thicker lifts and confined spaces. For a patio, rent the forward plate; for utility trenches or footings, rent the reversible.

Can I use a plate compactor on pavers without damaging them?

Yes, with a light forward plate and a protective pad or a sheet of plywood between the plate and the pavers. Sweep joint sand in first, make overlapping passes, and avoid the heavy reversible plates, which can crack pavers. Ask us for a paver pad when you book.

Will a plate compactor fit in my truck or SUV?

Forward plates weigh roughly 100 to 200 lb and fit in a pickup bed; two people can load one. Reversible plates run 300 lb and up and are easier with a trailer or liftgate. We can load it for you at either yard, or deliver it along with other equipment on your order.
