Use a smooth drum on granular material like sand, gravel and crushed stone base, and for finishing a surface. Use a padfoot (sheepsfoot) drum on cohesive clay and silty soils, which are common across Northern Indiana; the pads knead and break up the clay so it compacts properly. We rent padfoot shell kits that bolt over the smooth drum so one roller can do both.

What size roller do I need for a driveway or building pad?

A 66 inch roller handles most residential driveways, pole barn pads and small lots. Move up to a 70 to 84 inch drum for commercial pads, road base, large parking lots and deep lifts, where the extra drum weight and vibration reach further into the soil. Tell us the lift thickness and soil type and we will recommend a size.

Can I haul a ride-on roller myself?

Single drum rollers weigh roughly 7,000 to 25,000 lb, so most customers have us deliver. If you have a properly rated trailer and truck you are welcome to pick up at our Wakarusa or Waterloo yard. Delivery across Northern Indiana, Southern Michigan and Northwest Ohio is quoted by distance.
